Taiwanese schools are often praised by foreigners for their strong emphasis on communal obligations. While I appreciate the sense of being part of something larger than myself, the type of challenges offered by Thatcher seem a better balance of the spirit of communalism and individualism. A student can work hard on camping trip to serve the needs of his or her fellow students but the rigor of the tests of living in the outdoors will reveal inner sources of strength that can be personally enriching. The student can help feed his or her fellow campers, and take home the confidence that he or she knows how to build a fire. I know I am academically prepared to enter Thatcher: Thatcher would enable me to use that preparation in a creative fashion, and to explore new ideas. Of all the schools I have examined in America, Thatcher is the most hands-on: upon graduating I would know how to survive in the wild, ride a horse, and also be able to enjoy the benefits of the school's advanced-level computer courses. I could direct a play and also discuss the greatest works of world literature. The level of autonomy and responsibility Thatcher offers is thrilling to me, and unprecedented in my experience.
I hope my life abroad will enable my fellow students to learn more about the world, just as I strive to learn more about America by being a student at Thatcher. My international perspective can act as a resource during class discussions, while I look forward to the more open and contentious environment of an American classroom.
